Key Points
- SAVE borrowers who miss their 90-day deadline will get one final 30-day notice from their servicer.
- Anyone who still doesn’t act gets moved to the Standard or Tiered Standard plan, and Tiered Standard payments don’t count toward PSLF.
- Deadlines vary because each borrower’s 90-day clock starts on the date of their own servicer notice.
The Department of Education updated its SAVE guidance page on StudentAid.gov in October 2026 with a second warning for borrowers who let their deadline pass. Borrowers who don’t pick a new repayment plan within 90 days of their servicer’s notice will get a “final 30-day notice.” If they still don’t act, the servicer will move them onto a fixed payment plan automatically.
Servicers started sending 90-day notices to SAVE borrowers on July 1, 2026. In the Department’s own example, a borrower notified on July 1 had until Sept. 29, 2026, to choose a new plan. That first wave of borrowers is now the first group that could be inside the 30-day window.

Why It Matters
The final notice gives borrowers one more month, and it’s the last one they’ll get (as of now). Earlier servicer notices and our coverage of the July 1 rollout described the 90-day window as the end of the line. Under the updated language, a borrower has roughly 120 days from the first notice before the servicer chooses a plan for them.
The plan the servicer picks is rarely the cheapest option. Borrowers with no loans disbursed on or after July 1, 2026, go to the 10-year Standard Repayment Plan. Borrowers with a newer loan that has entered repayment go to the Tiered Standard Plan, and the Department confirms payments under that plan don’t count toward Public Service Loan Forgiveness.

How The Final Notice Works
Here’s what we know:
- The clock starts with your servicer. The 90 days run from the date your servicer sends its notice. An email from Federal Student Aid doesn’t start or reset the clock.
- Each notice has its own subject line. The first reads “You Have 90 Days to Select a New Repayment Plan.” The final one reads “Final Notice – You will be Placed into a New Repayment Plan in 30 Days.”
- Deadlines differ by borrower. Servicers notify borrowers in batches, so two people at the same servicer can have different dates. The Department says every SAVE borrower will be notified before the end of 2026.
- Pending SAVE applications follow a separate rule. Servicers are denying those applications. A borrower who ignores both notices returns to the plan they had before applying for SAVE.
- The new bill arrives with notice. Servicers must send the new payment amount at least 21 days before the first due date.
The Department doesn’t say how quickly servicers send the final notice after the 90 days end. If a servicer sent it on September 30 to a borrower whose deadline was September 29, that borrower’s last day to choose would land October 30. Borrowers can confirm their own dates in their servicer’s online inbox.
Our SAVE forbearance article covers what changes once a borrower leaves the forbearance.
How To Find Your Notice And Deadline
The fastest check is your servicer’s website inbox, where the Department says the date of your notice is listed. Borrowers who opted out of digital messages will get the notice by postal mail instead, so keeping your address current with your federal student loan servicer matters here.
Borrowers can also search their personal email by subject line or by the sender address the Department lists for each servicer:
A message from any other address claiming to be a final SAVE notice deserves a second look. Log in to StudentAid.gov directly to confirm your servicer and current plan, and skip any link in an unexpected email that looks like a student loan phishing attempt.
What Auto-Enrollment Could Cost
We don’t recommend borrowers allow the Department of Education to make a choice for them.
Say a borrower has $35,000 in pre-July 2026 federal loans at 6.5% interest and $55,000 of adjusted gross income. The 10-year Standard plan would cost about $397 a month. The same borrower on the Repayment Assistance Plan would pay about $229 a month.
Letting the servicer choose would cost this borrower roughly $168 a month.
RAP can stretch repayment to 30 years, so the lower payment carries a longer timeline. Borrowers can run their own numbers with our RAP student loan calculator and compare the result against Income-Based Repayment. Also, borrowers should look at our guide on 10 ways to lower your AGI to lower your student loan payment.
Borrowers pursuing PSLF face a different cost. Months spent in the SAVE forbearance don’t count toward the 120 payments, and Tiered Standard months don’t count either. PSLF buyback can recover some forbearance months, but only for borrowers who already have 120 months of qualifying employment.
A borrower placed on Tiered Standard can still apply for a qualifying plan later, though no month on Tiered Standard will count toward PSLF.
How This Connects
The final notice is the last step in a SAVE wind-down that began when a federal court order ended the plan in March 2026.
More than 7 million borrowers were still enrolled in SAVE when notices began, and most have four income-driven options to pick from. PAYE and ICR both close no later than July 1, 2028, so borrowers who choose one of those will face another plan change within two years.
Our estimates are that a little over half of borrowers in the SAVE plan have received their notices to date.
What’s Next
Borrowers don’t have to wait for either notice to act. They can apply for RAP or another plan on StudentAid.gov today.
Help from a federal servicer is free, so any company charging a fee to switch plans is a red flag.
The next change to watch is the first round of auto-enrollments in about 4-6 weeks, which would show up as new payment notices this fall.
