However, just over one year ago, former Bookkeeper Launch student and then-CEO Jaime Rodriguez acquired Bookkeepers.com from founder Ben Robinson. Since then, they’ve helped countless women and men create independence through their own bookkeeping business with their Bookkeeper Launch course.
Even if you know nothing about bookkeeping, if you have the right characteristics, you can make $80 per hour running a bookkeeping business from home.
Tell Us Your Background.
I started out working in accounting and eventually became a controller at a large law firm in Houston, TX. I had a good career, but my workday was usually 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. With the commute, I was leaving the house around 6:30 in the morning and getting home close to 8 at night.
I remember thinking, “I can’t do this forever.” I wanted to get married and have a family someday. I wanted to actually be there for my wife and my first baby, and I couldn’t picture how that was going to work with the schedule I had.
I joined Bookkeeper Launch in 2017 and started my bookkeeping business, Paralledger. Over time, I started helping other students, which eventually turned into coaching and teaching. In 2025, I had the opportunity to purchase Bookkeepers.com.
I still have my bookkeeping business today. And now that I’m married and we have our little girl, the reason I started all of this means even more to me.
Why Did You Want to Get Involved in Teaching People How to Start a Bookkeeping Business?
Honestly, I didn’t set out to teach. I was a student who started sharing what was working in my own business with other people in the community. And what wasn’t working, too. Sometimes that’s just as helpful!
Eventually, I was asked to help answer student support emails. Then I started hosting coaching calls, and later I was recording curriculum.
Somewhere along the way, I realized how much I loved those lightbulb moments. Someone has been struggling with something, you explain it a little differently, and suddenly it clicks.
I live for that. And then getting to watch that same person grow, take on clients, and build a business they weren’t sure they could build? That’s been the most fulfilling part of this for me.
What Personality Types Make Good Bookkeepers?
You don’t have to be the quiet person who loves math. And you don’t have to be the outgoing person who can walk into a room and talk to everybody, either.
What I look for is someone who cares about getting things right, follows through, and is willing to ask questions when something doesn’t make sense. You’re helping a business owner understand their money. That takes curiosity and a willingness to keep learning.
And if you’re thinking, “I don’t know if I’m confident enough to do that,” I wouldn’t rule yourself out over that alone. You’re considering something you haven’t learned yet. Of course it feels intimidating.
Confidence grows as you learn, practice, and start seeing that you can do things you couldn’t do before.
How is AI Changing the Bookkeeping Role?
I use AI in my own bookkeeping business, and I encourage other bookkeepers to learn how to use it, too.
I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t going to change the work. It already is. If your whole service is recording transactions and sending over reports, I think you need to pay attention to that.
But business owners still need someone who understands what those numbers mean. Someone who can spot a problem, ask the right questions, and explain what’s happening in a way they can actually understand.
That’s the kind of bookkeeper I want our students to become. AI can help you work more efficiently, but you still need to understand the bookkeeping so you can check the work and help your client.
I’m excited about what we can do with it. I also wouldn’t tell someone they can skip learning the fundamentals because AI will handle everything.
How Much Can You Realistically Earn Running a Bookkeeping Business From Home?
Let me give you examples from my own business, because I think that’s more helpful than throwing out a big income number.
My average monthly client fee is about $645. I have clients paying around $400 a month and others paying as much as $2,550. The price depends on what that business needs.
For a very small client, about $350 a month is generally the floor we talk about. We also have a pricing calculator to help students work through their fees. It defaults to $80 an hour as a starting point for calculating a price, but that doesn’t mean you’re guaranteed to earn $80 for every hour you work.
For some perspective, five clients at $645 a month would be $3,225 in monthly revenue, before business expenses and taxes.
Building up those clients takes work. Learning how to serve them well takes work, too. But you can see how a relatively small client base could make a meaningful difference for a family.
How Long Does It Take to Complete Bookkeeper Launch?
The course is laid out to be completed in 90 days. To follow that schedule, you should plan on about two to three hours a day.
But it’s self-paced. You don’t have to put your life on hold or finish by a deadline. Most of our students are juggling a full-time job while learning, so we see many finish closer to four months.
If you’re working and raising kids, I’d rather you make a plan you can stick with than try to keep up with someone else’s schedule. Give yourself time to understand and practice what you’re learning.
Do You Teach People How to Find Clients?
Yes. Learning bookkeeping is one part of this. Learning how to build a business and find clients is another, and we teach both.
You can know how to do the work and still wonder, “Okay, but how do I get someone to hire me?” We help students work through that part, too, including pricing their services.
That doesn’t mean clients automatically show up because you finished the course. You’ll have to put what you learn into practice and have conversations that might feel uncomfortable at first. But you’ll have guidance as you do it.
What Will People Learn During Your Free Training Series?
The free lessons are there to help you figure out whether this actually makes sense for you.
Bookkeeping isn’t for everyone, and entrepreneurship isn’t easy. I want you to understand what both involve before you decide to pursue this.
We talk about what it takes to do the work and what it takes to own a business, so you can start asking yourself, “Would I enjoy this? Am I willing to learn this? Does this fit the life I’m trying to build?”
You don’t need to have it all figured out before watching. That’s what the lessons are there to help you do.
