Shingo Yamashita’s Cosmic Princess Kaguya! is hitting Netflix in January, and judging by the above trailer, we’re in for an absolute treat.
It’s the Chainsaw Man and Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 opening sequence director’s feature debut, set in the dazzling, music-fuelled world of Tsukuyomi. According to Netflix’s Tudum, the anime film is inspired by Japanese folktale The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter.
In the trailer, former moon resident Kaguya (voiced by Yuko Natsuyoshi) befriends Earthling, songwriter, and student Iroha (Anna Nagase). Not wanting to return to her lunar home, Kaguya instead wants to become a top idol and streamer, specifically in the virtual realm of Tsukuyomi. There, she meets “the diva of Tsukuyomi,” Yachiyo (Saori Hayami), who sings Cosmic Princess Kaguya!‘s main theme “Ex-Otogibanashi” (“Ex-Fairy Tale”), composed for the movie by Vocaloid producer ryo (supercell).

Cosmic Princess Kaguya! is streaming on Netflix on Jan. 22.
